Consistency and Capital Preservation


Our fixed income strategies stress consistency of returns and safety of capital by investing in notes and bonds issued by the Canadian federal and provincial governments and by corporations. Independent research is a cornerstone to our approach with significant time allocated to proprietary credit and economic research. As in the management of our equity portfolios, we focus on the long-term outlook for interest rates and structure our portfolios accordingly. A key component of our credit selection process is establishing a disciplined outlook for specific sectors of the fixed income credit market. Within each sector we evaluate each individual security based on a rigorous bottom up analysis of the fundamentals of the business and the industry in which it operates.

Jim Gilliland, CFA

Head of Fixed Income

Jim joined Leith Wheeler in 2009. He has extensive investment experience in Canadian and U.S. fixed income markets through his time at HSBC Asset Management/M.K. Wong & Associates in Vancouver (1993-2001) and Barclays Global Investors (BGI) in San Francisco (2002-2009). Among his achievements were building out and managing a team of professionals covering interest rate strategies, corporate credit, securitized credit, and emerging markets; launching and managing a successful fixed income hedge fund; developing platforms to manage risk; and developing customized client solutions and liability driven products.

Jim earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree (Honours) from the University of B.C. After his work at HSBC, Jim earned his Masters degree in Financial Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley where he finished with the highest academic average in the program. Jim holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Eric Lam, CFA

Fixed Income Analyst

Eric joined Leith Wheeler from TD Bank in January 2009. He has been in the investment industry since 1993 and spent the last 10 years trading a proprietary bank portfolio of credit default swaps, investment grade and high yield bonds for TD in New York and London.Prior to that he was with RBC Dominion Securities in Toronto where he was involved in trading Canadian Mortgage-Backed securities products, global interest rates and foreign exchange. Eric covers financial credits and works on economic forecasts and portfolio strategy.

Eric graduated from UBC with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.

Catherine Heath, CFA

Fixed Income Analyst

Catherine joined Leith Wheeler’s Fixed Income group in April of 2000 after graduating from Simon Fraser University with a joint Bachelors Degree in Finance and Economics. As part of the Fixed Income team, she is responsible for the strategy, trading, and analysis of fixed income portfolios for both pension and private clients. Catherine holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is past president of CFA Vancouver (2007).

Alexei Konopkine, CFA

Fixed Income Analyst

Alexei joined Leith Wheeler’s Fixed Income group in March of 2005. He graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. As a member of the fixed income team, Alexei is involved in portfolio risk analysis, interest rate strategies, economic forecasting and development of fixed income software applications. Alexei holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of CFA Vancouver.

Thomas Holloway, CFA

Fixed Income Analyst

Tom joined Leith Wheeler in September 2008. He has worked in portfolio management since 2006 and has experience in Canadian and foreign fixed income and equity markets. Tom started at another Vancouver investment manager in quantitative equity before expanding into fixed income. Tom helps to analyze portfolios and markets in order to plan and execute fixed income trades.

Tom holds a Master’s of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Alberta as well as a Bachelor of Science degree from McGill University. He holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and is a member of CFA Vancouver.

Rabbie Gill, CFA

Fixed Income Analyst

Rabbie joined Leith Wheeler from Vancity Credit Union’s Inhance Investment Management in April 2010. He has 10 years of experience and spent the last three years as the fixed income portfolio manager for the Inhance Bond, Money Market & Monthly Income Funds. Prior to that he worked with Vancity Treasury Division and with Canaccord Capital as a Research Associate. At Leith Wheeler, Rabbie assists with interest rate, credit and economic strategy.

Rabbie graduated from Simon Fraser University with a Masters in Business Administration and a Joint Bachelors Degree in Finance & Economics. Rabbie holds a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
