External Advisor for the Management Board

Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel Ltd (LWIC), a leading Canadian investment manager, is seeking to appoint two external advisors to its Management Board. Founded in 1982, LWIC is an employee-owned firm specializing in investment management for institutional pension plans, foundations, and private clients. With offices in Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto, LWIC prides itself on delivering exceptional results and solutions.

We are inviting accomplished professionals to join LWIC as external advisors, bringing their seasoned expertise to guide the firm in addressing the evolving needs of its clients and navigating a dynamic market landscape.

Job Description:

As external advisors, you will play a pivotal role in providing strategic oversight and an independent perspective to LWIC’s Management Board. Working alongside a team of senior executives, you will contribute to the firm’s long-term success by offering guidance and evaluation across critical areas, including:

  • CEO performance review and evaluation
  • Strategic planning and execution
  • Risk management and mitigation
  • Regulatory compliance and governance
  • Financial performance monitoring
  • Talent planning and development

Although non-voting members, external advisors are integral to ensuring LWIC remains at the forefront of the investment management industry while staying aligned with its strategic objectives.

Expectations:

As an external advisor, you are expected to:

  • Bring in-depth knowledge of the Canadian investment landscape and emerging trends.
  • Actively participate in board discussions, providing strategic insights and constructive feedback.
  • Uphold LWIC’s reputation by demonstrating integrity, discretion, and professionalism.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive client, financial, and competitive information.

Job Qualifications:

We are seeking two distinguished professionals with the following expertise:

  1. Business Development Expertise: Proven success in business development, particularly in the private client and/or institutional sectors.
  2. Investment Expertise: Significant experience in investment management, ideally at the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) level or in a senior investment leadership role.

Additional qualifications that will set you apart include:

  • Independence from LWIC’s current client base.
  • Experience with employee-owned firms.
  • Prior board experience and governance certifications (e.g., ICD) are advantageous.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and French is desirable.

Time Commitment:

We recognize the value of your time and ensure a meaningful yet manageable commitment:

  • Four in-person board meetings annually in Vancouver.
  • Annual interviews with senior shareholders, particularly for CEO performance evaluations.
  • Ad hoc meetings with the CEO or key stakeholders on specific initiatives.
  • Participation in select client events and educational seminars as needed.

All travel and related expenses will be covered, and LWIC provides a competitive annual stipend along with an educational allowance to support your ongoing professional development.

Term of Appointment:

The initial appointment term is two years, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement. Annual feedback will be provided to ensure a mutually beneficial partnership.
